Crystal Faith Harris Sollinger, 47, died Friday, September 8, 2017 doing what she loved - caring for her patients on board Duke Life Flight as their nurse. Born on October 27, 1969 in Wake County; she was the daughter of the late Henry Matthew Harris and Carolyn Joyce Hardy Harris. Crystal graduated from Garner High School and earned her BS in Nursing from Atlantic Christian College.

She began her 25 year nursing career with Duke in June of 1992 in the 7100 Cardiac Stepdown Unit. In August of 1997, she transferred to the CCU Intensive Care. In January of 2002 , following in the footsteps of her aunt and mentor, Sonya Hardy, Crystal began her career as a flight nurse for Duke Life Flight. While at Duke, she attained numerous certifications to better help her patients during their emergency flights.

At college, Crystal met the love of her life and soul mate, Robert Bruce Sollinger. Together most of the time, they shared a love of family, friends, giant tuna fishing, Carolina sportfishers, diesel smoke, big hair, cars, bulldogs, fine wines, aviation, and travel. Crystal's other passion in life was her career as a Duke Life Flight nurse and the enduring friendships she made with crew and co-workers alike. Her career was an extension of her love of helping others in their most critical hours of need. She loved her Lord and Savior and believed strongly that the passion and ability she possessed was a gift from Him and how she gave of herself to others was her gift to Him. She inspired others to be the best by always giving her best.

She was loving and kind; adventurous but cautious; slow to anger but possessed a will of iron. She was not afraid of 10 foot seas or whatever weather was interfering with her patients and the amazing pilots she trusted to bring them safely back to base. She was the embodiment of the ideal nurse; knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated. She was funny, at times irreverent, and always available to anyone in need. Crystal will be missed more than mere words could ever convey. But her family and friends know she will live forever in the hearts and minds of the many lives she touched with her magnificent blend of gifts that were uniquely Crystal.

She is lovingly remembered by Robert, her husband of 20 years; grandmother: Jesse Faircloth Hardy; aunts: Rita Parrott (Macon) and Barbara Staton; mother-in-law: Barbara Sollinger; sisters-in-law: Jeanie Stanley (James Robert) and Linda Toler (Lee); nieces and nephews: Christopher and Ella Toler, Lindsey, Emma and Ethan Stanley, and Robin Pichay (Roberto); and by other family and friends, including her cousins: Summer Carr (Kim), Mac Hardy (Judy), Tina Maynard (Patrick), Jason Staton (Stephanie), Barry Staton, and Vickie Richie (Bob).

She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandfather, Charles Monroe Hardy, her aunt Sonya Hardy, uncle Charles Hardy, Jr., and by her father-in-law, Merle F. Sollinger, Jr.

Family will receive friends on Monday, September 18, 2017 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh). Graveside Funeral Rites, officiated by Rev. Susan Hobbs of Garner United Methodist Church, will be held at 2:30 pm at Raleigh Memorial Park.
